Be Aware of Kampala: Part I
Be Aware of Kampala. Part I Pavements are not for pedestrians but Boda Bodas, you will be knocked down. Zebra Crossing are not for safe crossing unless you want to be asked if you are a zebra, at worst knocked before questioning. Traffic lights don't mean anything, even when they do, Boda Bodas take the first priority. Taxi men are the only ones who know how to drive, in fact it is said you are supposed to drive your car only, your way. Many have sirens just in case they find two cars ahead of them, then urgency escalates. No matter how they drive, don't bother people with special number plates. You are always in wrong before a traffic officer, better fold your palm and speak Luganda if you have no call to make. Standing on a roadside with heavy jam is a death sentence, you can easily be knocked by a car or boda boda which has better things to do. Road side markets mean stalls in the road, crush a vendor's tomato laid in the road and you will compensate with a sack. Absence of traffic officers means absence of traffic rules on that road. Heavy rains mean flooded roads, no matter how they pretend to maintain the drainage systems. If you survive dust, potholes will always serve you in one ride what the gym does in years.
