Our Walls
In great sincerity, one president said to another president, "...Tear down this wall".* Some walls have been burned to the ground. Other walls have been completely demolished. The walls of Jericho fell at the sound of a shout. Some walls like the Berlin Wall are built to keep people in. Other walls are built to keep people out, like the Wall of China that was built for protection from their would-be invaders. The Berlin Wall, separating West Berlin from East Berlin in Germany, was built in 1961 and torn down in 1989, restoring freedom to thousands. The Great Wall of China is more than 13,000 miles long, and has been around for 2700 years. Figuratively speaking, there are lots of us who, instead of building bridges that connect us one to another, have constructed huge walls in our lives, keeping us in and others out. Our fears, insecurities, and trust issues are delicately guarded. Often, our walls are decorated and painted so well that they are well disguised and difficult to discern. Not all walls are created equal, because some are necessary. One president listened to the other and concurred, demolishing that ugly wall. Any wall that is designed to hurt, harm, or destroy is an ugly wall. 053121cj *President Ronald Reagan to President Mikhail Gorbachev
