The Goodness and Cruelty of Man Selma
Again another MRI, the clacking sounds -- the injection of dye It’s been awhile with covid on the rise And vaccines found and given now inside and outdoors The radiologist sent me to 7 pm and changed it to 4 I believe he found me an easier ride Even the oncologist allowed the change and I am forgiven As I worked to get my husband and I vaccinated to survive My spine is aching and there is stinging in the nerves I try a few exercises, Lodine, read and observe But now I have read every night about Selma A young Jewish Resistance Fighter and Ravensbruck Survivor Who bleached her hair and changed her name As she became in the Netherlands and Germany a spy and driver Became sick and saw horrors when sent to a detention center Where she was forced off and on to do unspeakable chores Kept her name Dutch made it Christian, still there were tormentors Angry cruel prisoners and the sickness and cruelty of the SS They were prisoners of war and murdered but not quite the same As what was done to the Jewish population in Hitler’s name I finished it last night and held the book in my hands Trying to comprehend the cruelty of man And think upon my little problems with kind nurses and techs Scientists working to get a vaccine to help humanity X-rays and blood labs smiling faces and kindness She living in her 90s and wrote this book I read So many starved, cold and sick and dead Then I knew no more complaining only helping whenever I can.
