In the Last Days
Poem inspired by a 2013 Australian apocalyptic thriller movie known as, "These Final Hours". Depending on certain criteria, YouTube is running this movie in its entirety free for most, if not, some of its viewers. In The Last Days In novissimis diebus Poetic Form: Dramatic Verse The announcement ... "According to scientists around the world, the interacting natural phenomenon from beyond and within Earth will combust our world in a matter of days, beginning from our northern hemisphere and moving toward our south pole." The final words ... "Heaven forgive us!" Seats of governments became emptied in lieu of an anarchical state, conceding the populace the right to govern themselves. Law and order were replaced with chaos and mayhem. Me, myself, and I ... compelled minds to exhaust. Businesses became abstracts as their workforce grew hypothetical. The bourgeois sipped Chateau de Rothschild vintages' as they prostrate amongst their vaults of amassed plunder. Whilst able -- our technical web, instantaneously, ensnared dependents toward excess daring frenzy to a race. 'Twas short-lived as most fell martyrs to no service due to dropped connectivity to cell towers. Transportation practically ceased as abandoned ships, planes, trains, and vehicles strewn the landscape. Power plant workers hypothesized from afar, prompting the power of man's light to flicker and fade. Teary eye-ducts glisten in reeling shadowy rooms as nature's faint breaths glint the glows of consuming wicks, thawing their waxen beacons in an obsessed world. Homes replaced prisons as each became wardens of their own fate. Unattended zoos grow wilder, the unfed feasts indiscriminately as ingenuity deprived many of their keeps. Jungle instincts on the prowl as beast versus man now made into a desperate breed. Sleepless from gunshots and shrieks as sun lights upon the suicides and the murdered, plus the dying. The voices of children wane hour after hour. Indoors, a pet gorges into a large toppled bag of treats, the light switch left in an on position made a bulb meaningless, a broken clock litters a living room carpet, a fan of fans no more, and stench seeps through a refrigerator door. Days of afeared realism with intermittent brevity of blissful dreams play like a tennis ball traversing the courts while whistling zephyrs unbridles one's hair -- now left in a state of unmanageableness, inattentiveness grips. Dire attempts stretching for delicate bubbles fail, burst after dismal burst. We are tethered to this world, our lives locked to it without a key. The righteous few penitents pray amidst their loved ones gathered during the last days, armed with The Word. 2021 April 26
