Enter Poem or Quote (Required)Required This piece was inspired by my father in law, who farmed here in Iowa for 97 years. He was the kindest and most devoted man, and father, I've ever known. With combines tearing corn from stalks in crackling ivory fields, And chaff to cloud the sky with amber bits of golden wheat, The farmer carefully gleans the grain of life the harvest yields, And closes yet another year of nature’s great repeat. He’s reaped the joys of bounty, and…the bitter years of strife, From chiseling through a hungry soil and laying seeds to rest. And now, at ninety years of age - a farmer all his life - A farmer’s son…and father…he believes that he is blessed. Watching sons…and grandsons…break the earth as he has done For more than seven decades is a source of pride indeed. He feels an honor deep inside to know he is the son Of one from whom he learned to break the sod…and sow the seed. And as I sit here pondering o’er the part that I have played, Paling by comparison to what a “Farmer’s” worth, Having earned a gratitude he’s far too seldom paid, I’m convinced that those who till the soil…deserve the earth. And FYI: I plan to post many of my AUDIO files over the next few months, most from my 4 new AUDIO-CDs, along with many more text files from my several books of verse. (Only a few CDs and books left - 2-14-21). Because, as with most poets, it simply depends on the mood I’m in at writing time, my pieces vary greatly, from lightheartedly comical to meaningfully poignant, and even a few slightly irreverent works.
