Rescue-Zoo-Com
Rescue-Zoo.com I was sitting in their studio with a gal from cable news, taking part in my first and only ever interview, Fielding friendly questions that pertained to how and why I’d wound up, at the age of forty, owning my own zoo. After introducing me to several thousand listeners, she began by asking me, “So...what’s it all about? Did you ever imagine that something this inclusive would ever come of what you’d planned the day you started out?” “Protecting the environment was something,” I began, “my father’d strove to teach me as a child, I’m proud to say, And my stint with - Parks and Wildlife - at Idaho DNR - definitely paved the road that led to where I am today.” “Is there anything specific you remember from your past that made you feel the need to quit your job and take this on?” “Absolutely,” I replied. “We chanced upon a doe one night while driving home from town...standing on the highway with her fawn! “I jammed the brakes, tapped the lights to bright and honked the horn to make her bolt, but...even then...she wouldn’t leave the road! My wife, Marie - my girlfriend then - who’d happened to be dozing...unaware of why it was we’d so abruptly slowed... “Staring out the windshield...her eyes like paper plates...exclaimed, ‘Unless you’re going to take their picture, pinhead...honk the horn!’ “I tried that,” I responded, “it obviously didn’t work. There must be something wrong,” I said! “The fawn looks freshly born “So she isn’t going to just - take off...knowing it can’t keep up...but why she’s choosing not to run simply makes no sense! Perhaps she’s just too terrified...doesn’t know what to do...or maybe she hurt, or broke a leg trying to jump a fence!” “Turning the lights completely off, I offered...‘Let’s try this. Maybe if it’s dark enough they’ll find the nerve to flee.’ But even then - amazingly - the doe refused to leave...and as we sat there, wondering what the cause for this might be, “She lumbered around to face us! I turned the lights back on…and right away we noticed she was bleeding from the lip! Then awkwardly revolving to expose her other side, the answer we were seeking was projecting from her hip! “Six or seven inches of an arrow was protruding from just above her left hind leg...her blood had turned it red. ‘Well, that explains it,’ Marie began…‘she’s looking awfully weak. I think she’s trying to tell us that she knows she’ll soon be dead, “And is asking us to somehow - help her fawn!’ She started crying. Well...during my years in Wildlife Preservation, it was I Who’d anesthetized the bigger victims needing medical help...and euthanized the injured ones we knew were going to die. “So, turning the lights back on, I slipped out of my car, then popped the trunk and grabbed my personal tranquilizer gun, And - tearing up as well - I put the dying deer to sleep...then turned my full attention to the - suddenly-motherless-one. “That, with out a doubt, was when the seed of ‘rescuing animals’ was planted deep within my heart…I had to save that fawn, And ever since, when someone calls to tell us of a victim who’s lost their home are is badly injured...that’s the way it’s gone. “We pick them up, no matter what - and bring them to our zoo, hoping we can fix whatever’s wrong, or ease their pain. The Humane Society tutored us on how to feed and nurse them...and even provided funds from time to time to help sustain “What it is we’re doing. And, to help support our cause - we’re at - ‘Rescue-Zoo.com’ - for those of you who feel like pitching in, And I cannot exaggerate how constantly rewarding these many years of rescuing suffering animals has been.” “’So, what became of the fawn,’ she asked...‘the texts are flying in? The audience wants to know her fate, and, frankly…so do I.’ I tranquilized her…then worked her in to the back seat of my car. We knew that if we left her there - alone - she’d likely die. “She lived with us for several months, and, naturally, we named her - Bambi - and, once we knew she could make it in the wild...we turned her loose. And for the record,” I explained, “we’ve never turned away any animal suffering any manner of abuse!” “Once they’ve had a chance to heal, and all their needs are met...do you sometimes find them homes where you know they will be safe?” “Yes, we do,” I answered...“if we trust the ones who offer, but not the sort like Bambi, our vulnerable orphaned waif, “That likely wouldn’t have made it on her own. They usually don’t! Cougars, wolves, and coyotes kill them every chance they get, So...given our state, as you know, is thick with each of those...we tend to favor urban folks, who’ll raise them as a pet. “If anyone who’s listening would be interested in learning more about the ones we feel are…ready to be placed... Once we know your circumstance...and know that you’ll remember what the rescued animal that you’re asking for had faced... “By promising to care them, arrangements can be made to let them come and stay with you for an initial ten day trial, After which...if all goes well...the pet is yours to keep...though there’ll often be unannounced checks every once in awhile!” “Looks like we’re out of time,” she quipped...“thanks for coming in, and let me say...I think that what you’re doing’s really cool, And having seen the programs where they show what people do...I can’t believe that anyone can actually be that cruel!” PS: I've got 4 new CDs - @ 4 1/2 hours each = (62 diversely varied poems), listed on EBAY - under - “Mark Stellinga Poetry” - should those of you who travel care to be so entertained.
