Winter Wonder
Frosted window panes brittle to the touch Broken spider web of ice crystals cold to the tongue The world has burned a glistening white, Snow diamonds glittering in competition My breath in the air predicts a sore throat is on her way. Murderous rage of Jack Frost has crucified the highways A few brave drivers, steering around cars buried in four inch drifts Just a few more perilous miles, and we will be home for Christmas. Children totally unaware of any danger, gleeful about blinking lights Pull into the driveway and they dash into the yard to make snowballs. Won’t they get pneumonia? Their grandmother asks, not remembering We used to be out there until we were on the verge of frostbite. When they run in for hot chocolate and floating marshmallows Their cheeks are glowing pink and ice cold to the touch. They are wrapped in grandma’s quilt, settling down for a story. I watch them, feeling such love, as light snow floats past the window. Written 12-17-20 Contest: Winter Sponsor: Emile Pinet
