Autumn Solstice Contemplation
Scent of solstice fires fills my nostrils, while somewhere in the woods a lone wolf bays at the Full Corn Moon’s teasing smile. Longer nights marry the chill and hot cocoa, before the hearth where a warm fire sings out its chorus of pops and sparks. Resilience is the autumn, when fields are harvested and food’s preserved for the long cold nights of stews and chili. Holiday celebrations are planned and pumpkins are carved; baked up for the end-of-year festivities. Some folks celebrate and make sacrifices to the moon, in appreciation for her nurturing. On an equinox, day and night are approximately the same length of time; the sun’s equator aligns with the earth’s northern hemisphere; everything, everyone must change, even the seasons. I sip my moon tea, made by her rays. and take another sniff of the wood smoke and hear a complaining hoot owl in the distance; someone’s obviously frightened away his dinner. I smile, as I know the planets need one another, as much as Gaia and her children need them.
