Trance
the cemetery is still this Autumn day as rain falls like kisses of love on my cheeks to mingle with my tears . . . memories have shook the ocean of my sleep so, I have come to this stone garden that is beautiful and forlorn all is leaf-strewn with hundreds of hues as I walk the winding path . . . I am sinking into the atmosphere (into a trance) the day old flower I carry is wilted and I touch it's still smooth decaying petals why must it die so quickly . . . like my child who did not even gasp one breath oh, I am lost in a sea of headstones some faded and broken, some with dried out flowers oh, the love I had for my husband was a promise between us like a delicate bloom now, he is a name engraved in stone and the tattered pages of my life flutter as I go deeper into my grief and trance oh, sister your death in childhood has left a scar on the roadmap of my life and the drum of time rolled on death took my brother (who says peacekeepers don't die) my father, then mother and grandma . . . (why I have screamed to the sky) now, I notice there are sounds hidden birds are singing in the trees, chirp chirping and squirrels and chipmunks are scurrying in the leaves and as I gaze at the family tomb I imagine my own name engraved there (there is a space beneath my baby reserved) for we are all just shadows on the wall of time we have a time determined on this earth like an hourglass our existence ticks away above me huge grey rain clouds hang and the leaves beneath my feet are wet, so wet the family tomb is dark from the rain as it washes away the cemetery dust but nothing can wash away my grief and sorrow it is part of who I am now and bleeds from every word I pen . . . my mother used to say I had the saddest eyes my grandma said to look into my eyes would shatter your heart death is a guest who comes unbidden and leaves your life stained forevermore I accept all my memories- the sweet and the sad slowly, I retrace my steps down the winding road and when I go through the ornate gate I am aware of the world again, the traffic, the city sounds and the trance lifts . . . "drink from the blue cup of life and live well each moment" __________________________ November 1, 2020 Poetry/Free Verse/Trance Copyright Protected, ID 11-1299-552-01 All Rights Reserved, 2020, Constance La France Written for the standard contest, Ambedo sponsor, Silent One, Judged 11/4/20 First Place
