Meeting Magic Squirrel
Halloween night, and it was crazy dark, raining too. The doorbell rang, and I thought it would be you. But I got there in time to catch a glimpse of Magic Squirrel. He pelted me with candy, his fluffy tail in a giant curl. Why me? I asked, excited beyond belief, of course. He could have picked anyone, and my background is Norse. I do not have one tiny drop of squirrel blood that I know. Because you caught my relative and let her go! Oh, that tiny squirrel I caught back in nineteen eighty-two? I didn’t even mean to catch her. She was hiding in my shoe. Magic Squirrel gave me a swish of his tail and handed me a pie. It is pumpkin, your favorite, he said, with a wink of his eye. At the bottom of the pie under the aluminum foil Was a stack of twenties, and a teeny tiny pearl coil. Because you are a friend of the squirrels, you are our hero today. I was sorry now that my new friend had not time to stay.
