Light In the Darkness
I hid in the darkness of the room full of light, Though it was day, my heart in twilight. Nations raging with threats and the like, A virus nightmare had hit a new spike. The hair salon where I loved the warm smiles, Was closed now, and had been for quite a long while. Outside of the window the sun shining bright, But to many of us it felt like midnight. I fought off the darkness that threatened my soul, I felt a deep call to set a small goal. The neighbors I loved, in their homes, all in fear, A thousand miles away though so close, oh so near. An old silk bouquet, some Christmas tree lights, I worked through that day, and part of that night. Next evening found shrubbery that grew near my door, Brightly shining in darkness and seemed to implore, The neighbors to smile out from their sheltered gloom, I opened my curtains, the light filled the room. I somehow found light, in the middle of night, And though my small gestures could not set things right. My task had somehow just lifted my soul, Accomplishing something, a tiny set goal, Conveyed to my neighbors that love that we share, A light in the darkness, they knew that we care. I can't make the earth's complex troubles take flight, I can pray happy days are again within sight.
