Stories
Can I tell you of a man I used to know Who lived in a house down our road And I would see him, now and then He would never say hello to those he’d meet He would never hear the gossip in the street about him He had no friends But oh If you only knew the story Of all the things and places he had seen And how he could never tell his story About the lonely man That’s living in a world of broken dreams . Can I tell you of a woman in the city park Who would only ever come out after dark And you could meet her for a dime She would smoke a rolled up cigarette There was the smell of whisky on her breath You couldn’t keep her, she had no time But oh, if you only knew her story Of how she’d break your heart and make you scream And how she would love to tell her story About a pretty girl That’s living in a world of broken dreams . Can I tell you of a place where people go Where no one gives a damn and life is slow They have no answers, they’re at the end They can only tell a story of defeat, Of how the grime of the city streets Would finally drive them round the bend But oh, if you only knew their story Of how they walked the line and all the things they’d seen And how there will always be a story Of how the life they know Is living in a world of broken dreams
