Amid Falling Leaves
leaves are falling . . . as I walk the long winding road to the place of tears and your name engraved one grave in a sea of stones . . . the wind pushing me has a earthy smell squirrels and chipmunks are busy gathering trees drip their leaves in red and orange_ I stand with golden hair like a river streaming down this place holds me . . . like I am in great chains of lead I brush fallen leaves like tears from your grave how we loved to go for walks . . . along forest trails among the red maple trees but, now my life is weather-stained with the years my heart ravaged and scarred by death_ the leaves can drift and glide and the birds fly away but I stand here . . . like I have grown roots into the earth I close my eyes and see the wilting flowers smell the pungent sweetness . . . our love came unbidden like it was written for us to be then, like the falling leaves of autumn it fell away I have asked God why, why so many times_ wishing to glide and drift away like the leaves and birds __________________________ July 25, 2020 Poetry/Free Verse/amid falling leaves Copyright Protected, ID 20-1271-483-03 All Rights Reserved, 2020, Constance La France Written for the contest, Pick-A-Title, Vol 20 - Free Verse 3 sponsor, Edward Ibeh, Theme chosen - #1 Amid Falling Leaves First Place
