A Son's Lament
A Son's Lament When I was young you were there for me, Whenever the times I needed you to be; But slowly and surely as I grew It seemed the less I needed you. I would think I knew best, and ignore your rule; There were many a time I thought you a fool; Then the day came, I went out on my own, Your gray hair just told me how old you had grown. Day by day the years have gone by, With kids of my own, how the time does fly. But whenever they need me they know I'm there; They know how I love them, they know how I care; And sitting here now , watching them play, There are so many things I wish I could say; But the time for words isn't here anymore, Never again will you walk through my door. I was young, and foolish, and I didn't care That your love was with me, that you were there; Pride got in my way when you were around, I refused to show emotion, I stood my ground. Now, just a few pictures and a memory or two Are all I have left to remind me of you. I regret in my soul That I didn't do Enough to show my love for you. Now you're gone, you'll not return, And the emptiness in my heart will forever burn; I never really appreciated what I had, And all I can say is: I miss you Dad. God, do I miss you.
