The One Who Had Potential, Part Ii
II. Thankfully she had been in the back seat, and had only a minor concussion, they sat for an hour, then Thomas said, “Miles, we have to have a discussion.” They walked outside into the corridor, leaving Martina to site with the world, outside Father Thomas said to Miles, “You’re not the only thing she has in the world. “And like it or not, that twelve-years old girl will be raised up by a wanna-be thug, so you will end this gang-banging nonsense, no more running the streets and selling drugs!” Despite the grief, when Miles heard these words, a red-hot rage came to life in his eyes, he snarled at his own childhood priest, “You damn old fool! Are you looking to die?!” Thomas snapped,”Stupid boy, you have no time for that! You have a child who relies on you! And she has a chance to be something great, she is a near prodigy at her school! “Your parents realized she had more brains than more, that her aptitudes were something special, and I won’t see your screw up her best shot, Whitney has so very much potential! “Do not think that your bluster can scare me, it’s my job to fight the evils of Hell, and priest or now, if you fail your sister, I’ll come and beat your ass senseless myself!” With that he turned and went back in the room, Miles stood fuming, trying to hold his rage, until he saw his sister waking up, the mere sight of it sapped away his hate. His fights with his parents never had gone so far as to include the young Whitney, much as he wanted to punch Father Thomas, that was not something she needed to see. They stayed there for the next twenty-four hours so the doctors could run follow-up tests, and Miles tried to think of what he should do, he was nineteen, how did he know what’s best? When she was released, for a brief moment, he wondered what he was going to do now now, words had come to him that his parents’ will was unamended, so he got the house. When he went to go there, Martina followed, meekly said,”Please, don’t make me go back there. I can be of help, I’ll learn how to cook! I can help you out with your sister’s care!” There was such pure despair within her voice, but could he say yes to a prostitute? It hadn’t mattered when it was just him, but Whitney still was an innocent youth. He said,”You can come, but leave the work behind, I have to think about what’s best for her.” She said,”I’ll gladly be done with that. No girl dreams of becoming a hooker.” CONTINUES IN PART III.
