Hope Personified
Every day for the last five years the old man has sat, With his dog, in the shade of the old Oak Tree, From dawn to dusk most days, Watching and listening to the people as they visit the wishing well, That had been there since before he was born, Chatting to them about this and that, And hearing them make wishes that can only make others unwell, Yet he remains ever hopeful that before the day is done, Someone will come by Just to wish others well. He is still there today, As I sit here and pray that someone, someday, Will toss in their coin, Just for the privilege of wishing old Tom and his dog well, I might even do it myself if there is anything left in my purse, After I have quenched my thirst, And made my wish for a place for Uncle Fred on Boot Hill, With special mention of me in his will.
