Still Getting By
It was a good day today, Sun was out, rain stayed away. Feeling good, No tabs to pop, Clear out the shed, needs doing, Got everything out, then it went ding, Pain came back with an extra zing. Had to sit down, how long for this time. Yard is a mess, I'm covered in grime, Pain is remorseless so I reach for my dope, Need to rest for tomorrows hope. Been like this for years, week in week out, Some times in the night it makes me cry out. My mind drifts back to the army days Life at Saighton comes through the haze, They tried all they could to sort me out, Many guys there were in a very bad way. Results of conflicts far far away. They tried different tests alleviate pain, But the very next day it was back again. All these thoughts ran through my head, As I sat there, grimy outside the shed. Hope it don't rain, to myself I said. Tomorrow maybe I'll finish what I started today, Meds make me whoozy, so I'm off to my bed. Days like this, many times I wish I was dead. In my bed I hope the meds hit deep, Alone in the dark I cry myself to sleep. These are memories of times now past. The pain is still there but doesn't last. © Dave Timperley. 02/03/2020
