A Moment In the Life of a Volunteer Firefighter
As I am sitting quietly, with my family Watching TV and enjoying the night Then comes the tones from my radio Signaling something is not all right Not knowing what the call may bring My heart rate begins to rise It could be a house on fire Or a wreck causing someone's demise I hurry to the fire station Listening intently on the way To my radio, listening to What the 911 Operators have to say. They tell me it's a structure on fire, Flames visible, and no entrapment Within 90 seconds our turnouts go on Prayers for safety upwards are sent While in route we put our air packs on Adrenaline pumping through our veins Running into a structure on fire Some would think was completely insane. We enter while crawling upon our knees Armed with nothing but a fire hose Flames and thick smoke is what you see Can't see much beyond your nose We blindly make our way to the source with the hose we knock the fire back Fire being the destructive beast that it is We follow our pre-planned offensive attack Once this fierce battle is over and once the flames are all gone Back to the station we all go Another call together is done We carry on the rest of the day Or until we get another call A moment in the life of a volunteer It's not a bad life, not at all. 2/17/2020
