So Much Lovelier Than Any Tree
I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree* although the poem you wrote for me celebrating the anniversary of my sixtieth year oh how I wish I could hear your voice as you read it out loud You had never written a poem before so proud was I as I gazed in awe Your words I will write and to my delight I picture your face and those twinkling blue eyes as my poetry brings your words alive… “In ’47 full of grace A child was born with a freckly face Lovely red hair and a smile so sweet She swept all who saw her off their feet The smile is still there ~ so is the grace The charm ~ the fun ~ and the freckly face One thing is missing ~ that lovely red hair It has grown out naturally and is now strawberry fair You would never know she’s an OAP Looking so lovely as all can see So this special day ~ sixty years on time to celebrate with champagne and song! And now in tears looking back at those years how fast that time has gone when you wrote for me your poetry then nine months on and you had gone… I hear your voice read out to me words of love in your poetry those special words from you to me are so much lovelier than any tree… Written 8th February 2020 Reference to: ‘I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree’ by Joyce Kilmer* Contest Name Famous poetic lines 2 Sponsor Silent One 2nd Place Contest Strand Select H Sponsor Brian Strand HONORABLE MENTION
