Remembering Mom
Remembering Mom Written: by Miracle Man 2-6-2020 Long gone the days when Dominoes and Monopoly were king. Before High tech ushered in the words “Couch Potato”. When lawn mowers were pushed, not ridden, and a lawn was a buck fifty, not times a hundred. Then everything was done the hard way but it was the best the times had to offer. Every meal was fresh cooked because the ice delivery man only came twice a week with your block of ice. (for the old Wooden Ice Box) Sometimes we got a fifty pound block from the back of a tarp covered pickup. (which was actually maybe thirty due to melt) Mother did laundry most every day on a tub and scrub board. Her dryer was a sagging clothes line if she was lucky, or a fence if she wasn’t, And her answer to wash and wear was a “Sad Iron” This was a time when the most trouble a boy could get into was in taking a watermelon from someones patch. If drugs and shootings had been taking place, we wouldn’t have known about it because we had no TV. My grandfather told all his kids (10) that he had never heard of anyone ever dying from hard work. My Mom passed this story on to me, and I’m thankful she did. I often hear some speak about the old days, and they can have them, I was there. But then, on second thought, maybe they weren’t so bad in comparison to where things appear to be headed today. Tom
