To Each His--Or Her--Own
Brevity’s my cup of tea in poetry— usually. I relish rhyme. Meter’s sublime. To me, they’re prime— most of the time. On second thought, I’d rather have blank verse. Express your thoughts sans rhyming patterns, please, while making sure your meter is sustained. Just iambic pentameter will do. If you compose a lengthy blank-verse piece, each word must have a reason to be there! Though similes and metaphors are great, you need not cram one into every line. You’re free to show emotion, but don’t feel each line must be awash in tears and angst. Wait! Who do I think I am? Drop all those restrictions. No other person can dictate to you precisely how to live—or how to write, how much emotion to show, how to convey it, how DEEP you should delve (Not all poetry is MEANT to be deep!) how frequently you should use figures of speech, the style or form that should be your means of expression . . . . Be it rhymed and metered or restriction-free, just give me honest poetry that touches me and lets me see a glimpse of you—or a glimpse of me!
