Assemblage
All are walking to the courtyard the bell has tolled it’s time to start, they have all but arranged the wooden stakes they are just waiting to ignite the spark Everyone stops and stares as I make my way through the crowd, I can hear their taunting of me although I am trying to drown their voices out And as I get to my final destination before I take my stand, I look over to the left and there so beguiling you stand See you’re the reason that I am here in the first place being executed for this crime, but I’m not the one that should be punished you should be the one doing time But instead I bow my head and accept what has been bestowed upon me, what good would it do to retaliate? It’s not like they would believe See I am just a mistress and my scarlet letter I wear shamefully, but I’m not the only one that should be wearing this branding, this atrocity It takes two to tango or, so they say, but why aren’t you being punished for your crime? Why are they not treating you this way? Is it because you’re a man and they deem you higher than me? Is it because I was the one whom they thought tried to break up a family? See they don’t know the full story and it’s one unfortunately that you will never tell, so I had to make sure that long after I’m gone that your lies will be told oh so well See I have written a diary and placed it in the hands of someone you don’t know, so that once I have been burned at the stake everyone shall finally know That you’re not the innocent victim that you have perceived to be, but oh how you’re going to burn in your own way after what you have done to me I may be the one being belittled and criticized, but what are you going to do when the truth comes out and you can no longer disguise? Will she still stand by your side and continue to hold your hand? You may be smiling now but all will see soon that you’re no man See they don’t know that you pursued me and told me all these lies, and the sad thing is she doesn’t either to her all of this will be a big surprise So, go ahead and mock me and watch as they tie me to the stake, and revel in the glory that all your lies are about to burn with what you assumed was a mistake See you set this story in motion and you have formed this assemblage against me, but tonight you and I both know that you won’t be able to sleep When you see visions of me burning for your lies, then maybe you can come to terms with my demise So, as I stand here, they simply ask do I have any last words that I would like to say, and so I look right into your lying eyes and I simply say “I may be the one standing here about to burn, but in truth I did nothing wrong but love you but that’s alright one day it will be your turn” Then I look to her the one that you did all of this for and I say to her, “Does this make you feel better that you have him, someone that for you he had no concern?” You both look at me so vindictively, and then they pull the hood over my eyes so that I can no longer see I stand there and nervously wait for the burn, and I silently think to myself that when I leave this world at least I will no longer hurt There will be no more you and no more self-hatred of me, and then I can finally be at peace I hear their taunting as the flames begin to rise, and all that I can do is writhe in pain and cry The pain is so much more than I can withstand, and then my breathing dissipates, and I begin to understand That my time is up, the hour has drawn near, there is no one in this assemblage that for me will shed a tear My very last thought before the flames consume me whole, is that very, very soon all will finally know And so, I take my last breath and I silently whisper goodbye, it isn’t fair that for loving you that I had to die.
