Magic Dance: Part 2
Cont'd from Magic Dance: Part I After this, it was decided just to let it go. Could they help me? Could they save me? Evidently no. So they all went home and left me whirling like a top. What was I to do? I wondered. Dance until I drop? Suddenly I noticed someone shuffling through the door. Right away I thought I'd seen him — ragged as before. Yes of course! It was the hobo whom I'd snubbed that day! He approached and looked me over. What was I to say? "Are you weary?" grinned the stranger. "I am tired too. I've been wandering all evening after meeting you. Now I'd like to watch you polka. Do it with a smile. Why, I haven't seen such prancing in the longest while." But I pleaded: "Please forgive me! Pity me, old man. I was cruel, but I've been punished. Save me if you can!" "Well," he said, "you've had, my laddie, your fair share share of fun. You may stop. The dance is over, and the music's done." With these words the stranger vanished. I was left alone. I collapsed that very instant, letting out a groan. How I made it home that evening, I do not recall. Did I limp or did I stagger? Did I walk or crawl? Well, since then, the sound of music makes my heart stand still. At the sight of people dancing I feel very ill. Oftentimes I've mused and wondered whom I'd met that night. If you see him, I advise you: do by him what's right.
