Home Alone At Night
I'm soaking in a nice hot bath, Ridding myself of the day's aftermath. Then it begins, a dripping noise, This house can play tricks like bad little boys. It seems to be coming from inside the wall, But it's been checked before and there's no one to call. Bath all done and I'm ready for bed, Wearily down the staircase I tread. To sit by the fire in the living room, And sip hot tea alone in the gloom. I hear the staircase begin to creak. I look up, startled but do not speak. I go to look up the empty stairwell. Where the noise came from I cannot tell. I hear it again, tap, tap, tap, As though someone is stepping, pat, pat, pat. I look down the hall and back up the stairs, But find not a thing, there's just no one there. The house is empty, I'm here all alone. Even my cat of late won't come home. During the day not a sound, not a peep, But let the sun set and the house moans and creaks. Well I've come this far and I'm still alright. I don't think there's call to shake with fright. Things should be quiet as a mouse, Were I really alone in this house. I've not been approached, accosted or harmed, So I don't think there's any cause for alarm. I've noticed at times when I have a guest, The ghost is quiet, it's manners the best. Perhaps it's just the house, perhaps it's a ghost. Whichever, whatever, to one I am host; But it's all over now and I'm through with fright. I've decided some things just go bump in the night.
