Black Cat In the Window
Black cat in the window looking at the world, lickin' on its mittens, its tail unfurled. Watching every bird in the yard fly by, watching every cloud drifting through the sky. Dog on the doorstep squinting in the sun, waiting for its owner to get the yard work done while looking at the cat in the window up above, for chasing it 'round the yard is all it's thinking of. Squirrel in the oak tree looking at the dog, thinking about the acorns it had buried 'neath a log that lay not far from the window that the cat was sitting in whom the dog was looking at waiting for the chase to begin. Bird on the fence post looking at the cat who was now looking at the squirrel that was now looking mighty fat and who was staring at the dog laying on the steps still thinking about the cat and plotting what was next. The lady of the house was petting the purring cat who was now thinking about the bird on the post where it sat. The bird took a gander at the squirrel and the dog and made a straight beeline for some worms beneath the log. The squirrel in a panic started dashing down the tree to save its sacred acorns in spite of the other three who were now looking at each other as the bird was swooping down and a battle for worms and nuts would be the best animal show around. The cat arched its back and went a-leaping on the floor and the dog's hind legs were now rapping on the door, while the squirrel in a blur whizzed across the new-mowed lawn and the bird was a-hoping that the worms had not moved on. The meowing from the cat to be let out-of-doors had set the dog a-barking and was now up on all fours ready to pounce on the squirrel now digging for those nuts, the cat was ready to join the fray with no ifs, ands or buts. The lady of the house let the cat out the front which then leapt at the digging bird still on its fresh worm hunt while the dog chased the squirrel 'round and 'round the tree until it saw the cat come out. O! What a sight to see! So off the dog went to get that big black cat, and the squirrel was thinking how to get its acorns back, while the bird flew away, a juicy worm in its beak, and the dog and the cat now running up and down the street. The lady of the house came running after the two with bird and squirrel watching them as along the street they flew, one chasing another and the other until back to the yard they went the cat, the dog, the lady of the house their energies now all spent. The cat went back inside and the dog back on the stoop, the whole place turned upside down like a fox in a chicken coop, with the bird again on its post and the squirrel on a limb up high, both looking at the cat in the window back to watching the world go by. copyright © 2019 Gregory Firlotte
