Today
Today when the other students were absorbed in school work, I happened to look up and caught a young man staring at me. He is a young man who seldom comes to class, but the times he does arrive, he is a drop of sunlight greeting me with a beaming smile, seeming always so happy to see me. This adventurer from South America (who once told all of us how he flew to Alaska and then drove all by himself through its back roads, just to enjoy its raw beauty) is an unassuming, yet sweet, attractive young man. When I caught him today watching me, he did not too quickly withdraw his gaze as I would have expected someone to do. His gaze was dreamy, pensive, and tinged with the soft touch of wistfulness. It both flattered and puzzled me. Does he think I look like an older relative of his? (but his gaze was not the look a boy would give his mother). When this rare drop of sunlight left my room, I was left to imagine my words for this poem. This insignificant event had touched me somehow. In a different time and place (like back years ago when I was single and still in college) I think I would have later followed up on what that look had been about.
