Meeting the Neighbors On the 4th
The fourth of July is fun! She said. She thought so. I was of a different mind. Seeing ants on picnic tables. Figuring we would have to fight wasps For the ketchup bottle. The fourth of July is amazing! He said. Come on down. The whole family wants to meet you. They are a lovely couple, a bit older than me. It is my first month in my house. I know so few neighbors. Come meet the neighbors! She said. “I will bring something,” I said. “A cake maybe?” “Sure,” she agreed. “Bring cake.” Sixteen neighbors brought brownies or cake. They were hefty neighbors. And they thought I was skinny. Some of them picked me up to see. Yes, she is a twig, they agreed. After supper they had a lift and throw contest. I was the parcel they chose to throw. If I had not had two beers I might have protested. I was lifted and thrown innumerable times. When I was telling my mother about it she asked “Were there any fireworks?” “I saw stars,” I said, “So maybe." I was red, white and blue the next day. And I had to bring most of the cake home. Best 4th of July picnic in my neighborhood so far….
