Urban Sonnet - To Be Or Not To Be
URBAN SONNET – TO BE OR NOT TO BE How would Shakespeare view an urban sonnet, If, by some chance, he came back down today? Do you reckon he’d look kindly on it? Or would he simply shake his head and say, “For sonnets there are rules you must obey. This would not be accepted in my day. A sonnet should have fourteen lines of rhyme; And yet you’ve written half-a-dozen more. Standards have dropped a little since my time. I know my critics say that I’m a bore But all my sonnets total one five four And every one had fourteen lines for sure. And furthermore, your rhyming pattern’s wrong. It should not be A B A B B B. That’s why you’ve made the verses much too long. And then you’ve gone C D C D D D, E F E F F F, so can’t you see That’s why your sonnet’s much too long for me? Your final resolution I’ll accept.. G G I see is one rule that you’ve kept”. 27th May 2019 Urban Sonnet Contest Sponsor - Emile Pinet
