Fifty Years Ago
FIFTY YEARS AGO Fifty years ago today your heart was full of joy, You knew a child was on the way, you hoped it was a boy. So Mothers Day was special now, for soon one you would be, And as you planned, you prayed somehow you’d raise him righteously. You didn’t think about the trials or heartaches you might face, You concentrated on the smiles that soon would fill the place. You knew, perhaps, that there might be the nights you’d lie awake, But you looked far beyond to see a child with your namesake. A child you’d name after your dad if God gave you a boy; You prayed he, too, would make you glad and bring you lots of joy. And now as you are looking back through fifty years ago, I hope you do not feel you lack the joys you thought you’d know. I know that I have broke your heart with some things I have done, And may have failed somewhat the part you wanted from your son. But I can look back fifty years and know had it not been For one like you who prayed with tears, I’d gone in deeper sin. Yes, some could say you weren’t the best and point out where you failed, But you did some things right, I guess, for those things have prevailed. And now that God’s renewing you, it gives a hope in me That He can do that for me, too, and healing I can see. A half a century’s gone so fast, so much forgot you’ve done, But some things you have taught will last for many years to come. I want to take this time right now to say that I love you And hope that I will prove somehow these words I say are true. Dedicated to my mother, Mothers Day, 1998.
