Holiday Phone Calls
Holiday Phone Calls, Bah Humbug! Written: by Tom Wright 12/3/2014 “Out of area” our machine’s voice did say, Or “800 SVC” announced in her special way. The screen displays names I seldom know, Oft times some politician just wanting to blow; A Sheriff or Fire fighter who’s group needs cash, Or John 3:16 in need of food for their stash; It’s the U.S.O.C. and can we count on you, And the NRA still needs my instant help too. Even my OU Sooners get a little of the pie, St Jude’s and The Shriner’s are hoping I don’t die. The Children’s Cancer group on me is counting, Quickly pointing out, research cost, is mounting. Seems the Wounded Warrior’s needs help again, And can you help our PAC without much strain. The American Diabetes Assn. does good work, I can seldom say no; does this make me a jerk? The American Cancer Society I’ve known some time, Not helping this worthy cause would border a crime. All calls I now screen, block, or others just slumber, Some call me back from a different 800 number. As for do not call lists I’ve naught but contempt, Because those helped and politicians are now exempt. They sell my name to others earning more dough, While I sit watching my unwanted call list grow; All these seem tied to a good and noble cause, But fat with a beard don’t make me Santa Claus. *A few times daily the machine just announces city & state From which the call originates, And my thinking is, leave a message or we won’t talk. I’ve been told on more than one occasion “Boy you’re sure a hard man to get hold of” To which I reply, that’s because I don’t want to be gotten hold of; Consider yourself lucky today. Tom
