The Last Few Words - I Died a Little Inside
I will never forget that agonizing day, the day I heard the last few words from my husband. It tore out my heart. I wanted to die. Seven-thirty Wednesday morning, I called to check on him. I asked, "How are you feeling?" "I'm not feeling so well. I will tell you when you get here." he warned in just those few pained words. I assured him I was on my way. Within moments of hanging up, he went into cardiac arrest all alone. On the way to the hospital my phone rang. It was my husband's doctor. "Your husband has gone through three cardiac arrests, and we need you here." A dark suffocating gloom went right through me, tearing, I was dying inside. I drove straight there; all I could do was pray. The Chaplin was waiting by his door for my arrival, to comfort me. I stood and leaned against the wall, outside his room for hours waiting to be let in. I held his hand while he was dying. I died a little each time while I watched his heart weakened. I begged him to please don't leave, he tried just for me. After the sixth cardiac arrest that night, I finally said it's enough. He's too tired to fight, let him rest. 2/8/2019
