Painting a Past 1983
Tonight, my grandmother composes the meal. As the stew mists, she is like a wife-talking and dancing with the dinner as an old friend and advisor. She courts spices with new steps and song, then suddenly, she spins towards me in her spell and says, “Life is first separated, then put back together.” Candles glow on the table, which are both the moon and the sun, caught together with amber flames and cool opal receptive wax. The plates are empty clocks, but once filled with food, each bite becomes a second of her. Her knowledge and her sights of the world. I am now a silver cup, overflowing with life. From her permanence, I shall saturate all with my poetry from memories of the family tree. January 21st 1996 From Chapbook Songs From Stars Contest: Have You Published Sponsor: Line Gauthier
