Playing Mantis
When would earth's ribs collapse? I'd laugh and drink my milk From the sagging breast on its chest, unconcerned. My heart would feel no pain nor remorse. I often have the dream of the world's ending With the trumpet sounding up and down And I would be busy playing with sand I have no pact with the devil, I respect God. What would the soul of a single me contribute To the myriads of the condemned? What will I gain from living forever? What would a dead man gain With the world in his palm? When I'm called on to either sides, I'd take my time like a playing mantis, There would be a whisper, a silent whisper, Impatient silence, then a howling noise Like many voices to steal the silence. When would fire consume this earth? I'd be busy chasing after rats And shadowless butterflies. I'd walk about, arms in pocket, Lost in silent slumber of mockery. I'd wake up on the other side, Leave my bed unkempt and stroll outside Free of all charges!
