The Dream
THE DREAM I went to sleep one night and dreamed I walked on heaven’s shore Where all was bright and glorious and peace forever more. I walked the streets of gold and saw the river bright and clear, It was so hard then to believe that I was really here. I saw the gates of pearl and heard the angels as they sang, I heard the voices of the saints as they their praises rang. I saw the twelve disciples there, and saints who’d gone before; Each one gave me a welcome there as I walked heaven’s shore. And then I looked below and saw the ones I’d left below: My husband and my children, too, were mourning for me so. I wished somehow that I could tell them not to weep and cry, That they would meet me in this land some day beyond the sky. I saw them as they made the plans for laying me to rest; I saw the many flowers there, and the many funeral guests. I heard the preacher as he spoke to comfort them and pray; They walked once more beside my bier and wiped some tears away. Then suddenly I realized this wasn’t just a dream, For Jesus walked up to my side and overlooked the scene. He welcomed me to heaven then with words of love and cheer, And then I knew that this was real; at last I’d made it here! I went to sleep and I awoke in such a glorious place That Jesus made for everyone who’d trust His love and grace. And now, my loved ones there below, I know He’ll comfort you As you stand there beside my grave and bid your last adieu. Some day you, too, will leave that world of sorrow, grief, and sin, And I’ll be waiting for you here as you come softly in. Just make sure you are ready, too, to meet Him face to face, That you are saved by Christ the Lord through His shed blood and grace. Written for Rev. Charles Gray in memory of his wife.
