Changed
Changed. We see our loved ones go off to fight, Pray they stay safe both day and night. He marched away to go to war, Leaving behind, his wife and more. Met his mates along the way, All not wanting to go away. Laughing and joking for all to see, All a front, they were scared as can be. Just the average blokes on the street, Who was this enemy they would meet? Folk say he is the devil incarnate, If you relax and give him any quarter, You and your mates he surely will slaughter. Just the average man on the streets, He's a baker or maybe a seller of sweets. The milkman, the newsagent or binman, All going to fight as best they can. How do you kill if you don't know how? Will it make you a better man somehow? They fought in a war, not of their choosing, They fought tooth and nail, no thought of losing. We see our loved ones go off to fight, Pray they stay safe both day and night. The white flag was raised from the enemy side, Time to return to his own fireside, But when he saw home, no one there to greet, Life had moved on for the folk in his street. He looked for his wife, and the look on her face, The house was gone, just a bomb crater space. War had visited her while he was away, Nothing was there, his look of dismay, Leave it behind for another day. War changes things for everyone this is true. I hope and pray, it won't happen to you. We see our loved ones go off to fight, Pray they stay safe both day and night. © Dave Timperley, 02 November 2018
