The Climb On the Mountain
THE CLIMB ON THE MOUNTAIN Today I climbed a mountain to view the scenery there, And as I grew much closer, I saw the valley fair, But as I walked that pathway and saw that scene below, My legs began to tremble and I was shaking so. I wanted to get closer, but fear clutched at my heart, I just could not o’ercome it nor feel it then depart. I knew I should not fear it, the barriers are there, And I can keep my balance, the ground is firm and fair. But the chasm is so deep, too, and if I’d slip or fall, I’d never live to tell it to anyone at all. But how this now reminds me about my walk with God And climbing up a mountain from this old world’s sod. God wants me to draw closer, but I fear steps I take; He wants me to do better, past failures to forsake. He wants me to be holy and get more of His power To live a life of victory each moment and each hour. Yet I am still so doubtful of what this walk may be, How rough may be the pathway by which He leadeth me. As I look at the valley that lies way down below, I think of where I was once, in sin and shame and woe. What if I fall into it? It seems my biggest fear That I fight there inside me each time it seems so near. If I’d just see the boundaries He placed there in my way And how He wants to lead me so I will never stray, I would not fear this mountain I’m climbing now in life When it is filled with trials and when I face the strife. I could just hold on tighter to His Almighty hand And revel in the beauty of this new higher land. Yes, the climb there on that mountain taught me a lesson true: I must trust in the Savior and just enjoy the view.
