Little Bird Choose Life
One day I noticed a starling had flown into the shop and was trapped there. It could not see how to fly back outside. Every time I tried to approach the bird to capture it to take it back outside it would become terrified and fly away from my grasp. It eventually flew to a spot behind a wall where I could not reach it. The next day I could hear the bird calling but it was weaker than the day before. Each time I tried to reach in and grab it the bird would move out of my reach. The next morning I could hear the bird behind the wall but it was too weak to move. I knew it's time was short and without God's help it would soon perish. The bird's ordeal touched my heart. Not only because of the bird's peril but also because of the similarity between the bird and our human struggle to respond to God's calling. The bird could not see I was only concerned for its well being. He could not see I was trying to save it. It was afraid I was going to harm him. It was afraid of what would happen if it let me capture it. Many times God tries to capture our hearts for our own good. God calls and presents opportunities for us to surrender to him and trust his will in our lives. Just like the bird we are afraid of what will happen to us if we let down our guard and surrender to God. We are afraid of embarrassment, commitment and the fear of failing God. We are ignorant of what God is trying to do and are terrified to take that leap of faith into God's hands. God is trying to capture our attention and offer us a different future than one without God. Just like the bird we put up walls. Just like the bird died without accepting my help, God knows we will spiritually die with out accepting his divine help. Just like the bird we have two choices. One of spiritual death and eternal damnation if we continue to refuse God and one of spiritual life everlasting if we give our hearts to Jesus Christ and surrender to God's will. While the bird was acting on instinct and did not have a calling from God, we do. We all have a conscious decision to make. God calls us and gives us an opportunity to choose eternal death or everlasting life. Chose life, choose Christ.
