Mill Wheel
MILL WHEEL The mill wouldn't turn until the Spring The winter, quiet and hushed, maintained silence Time passed slowly, almost at a standstill Not even the birds were heard to sing Harsh days lay ahead, days that were yet to unfold And the hard cold grip of the winter months Were soon to break their bond on the town people Then, and only then, the grisly story would be told Whispers ran through the town from door to door But the truth was still a mystery yet to be determined Nothing would stop the wagging tongues of gossip The sound of silence was not evident any more The constant babble of what might have been done Was being whispered in quiet, hushed guesses No one knew the absolute truth, only conjecture Ice melts, revealing secrets - wheel creaks At the bottom of the mill pond, the answer now is found The disaster that held a town spellbound so long Was in full view for all the town to witness The farmers missing cow - had fallen in and drowned 2 July 2018 For the contest sponsored by Viv Wigley
