Life On a Roll
LIFE ON A ROLL Another sunset to walk towards, This day ending. Boots worn down some more. Rascal at my side. We ate only once. No complaints, no whimpers, only sore. We'll find a place to lay, as the sun sets behind an oak. Perhaps for a while we'll stay, with no bother from town folk. Miles and miles we've walked, through villages and towns not known. Only to survive, with luck he finds a bone. This is the life they said! Cars and money! My wife so beautiful. I had it all they said as my life was on a roll. But that roll has changed, Her life ripped from my clench Family came. friends called but now I've lost all my sense. So we took to the road, this Rascal and I, To find myself, to find a new home To endlessly wander, searching for my soul. The ground is worn smooth. By this oak we will lay. Unravelling my roll, sleep will be short, for quickly we reach another day. The sun creeps up from past a hill I see. Boots on. Roll packed. Walk again, hungry, longing, searching, him and me. This quest must end. Wandering and walking, Searching for my soul. But I don't know how. This is my life. My life on a roll. Graham Alexander Devenish
