The Cost of the Cause
THE COST OF THE CAUSE A driver badly beaten, as the rioters burn his bus A victim of the cause who passed away without a fuss He was thrown to the pavement and his life just ebbed away Though no one even noticed, amid the chaos and the fry A soldier blown to bits, yet some people sing and cheer He didn’t care about the cause; his squad was just sent here Another English village, mourns another murdered son A new recruit, from another town, picks up the soldiers gun A “hero” plants explosives, in a city centre store He calmly walks away, and then he waits to hear the roar Innocents killed to prove a point. In a sickly, cold attack It’s legitimate, they have a cause, and there is no going back A child is brutally mown down, by a gunman’s speeding van She was walking home from nursery, with her Mummy and her Nan Collateral damage to the cause, in a putrid, bloody war She was taken from her family, at the tender age of four Another Policeman murdered, yet it never changed a thing As he’s laid out in Church, and the choir begin to sing A broken, grieving Mother, has to lay to rest her son While terrorists fight a waning cause, which simply can’t be won
