Crystal Beach

She took a breathe in and water immediately filled her lungs. Her eyes darted open and took in the vast darkness around her. Jade was not startled or scared, for some reason she was very calm and understanding of the situation even though she had no recollection as to how she had gotten to the bottom of… where was she? Jade moved her hand to feel the soft earth below her, wrapping her fingers in dancing seaweed and wiggling her toes in the wet sand. The realization that she could breathe in this underwater fantasy world settled in and she giggled to herself, little bubbles escaped her lips and sparkled in front of her. Jade decided it would be a good idea to swim to the surface and get her proper bearings. Kicking off of the lake’s sandy bottom, she propelled herself to the surface. Breaking the water, she felt warm air caress her face and body. She swam to the sandy bank and climbed out of the water. Looking around, Jade felt the strange sensation of deja-vu come over her. Of course she had never been to this magical place prior to this day, but for some reason she felt like she had.

Trees as tall as skyscrapers surrounded the crescent moon shaped beach and were occasionally lit up by flashing, purple lightning. The rumble of thunder sounded like a delicate wind chime and brought peace and serenity to Jade. In the distance, there was music. It was very hard to make out but from what Jade could hear, it sounded like a group of people chanting and singing. The music was so beautiful and enchanting, similar to that of the Sirens she had read about many times in her Greek mythology studies.

“Hopefully this doesn’t end with my head on a stick,” she thought to herself.

Tying her hair up with a strand of seaweed she found stuck to her leg, she hoisted herself up off the wet sand and began walking towards the unknown. She used the light of the moon to guide her to the alluring harmonies. On her way she took in all of the incredible sights; flowers were glowing and moving without a breeze to carry them, caterpillars were changing into butterflies and then dropping to the ground and morphing into tiny, vibrating crystals. There was magic everywhere. Jade was in pure disbelief and awe of all the life altering visions before her eyes.

Shaking herself from her fascination, she continued on her path to the hauntingly beautiful songstresses. After walking about a hundred yards, Jade arrived at the edge of a clearing. In the middle of this golden meadow a group of people were dancing and singing the lovely melody Jade had been following.

Feeling Jade’s stare on their backs they stopped singing and turned back to look at her. Jade froze in her tracks like a child who had just been caught stealing candy before dinner.

“I-,” Jade started to say before the woman standing closest to her cut her off,

“Welcome, dear. What do they call you?”

“Uh, Jade. My name is Jade.”

“Well, Jade, I don’t know what has brought you here today and I’m not so sure you know why either?”

This woman seemed very wise and warm. All of the worries that Jade had been feeling a moment ago vanished and she wanted to know more about this woman and these people. Also, she realized that this mysterious woman was correct; up until this point, jade had not even thought about how or why she was in this tropical dreamscape. There was so much going on she just accepted that she was here without a second thought about it. However, now that she was thinking about it, maybe there was a reason she wound up at the bottom of that spring. Did it have to do with fate perhaps?

Remembering that the kind woman was still expecting a response from her, she explained everything she remembered up until this point.

“So, that’s all I know. I don’t even remember anything before waking up at the bottom of that spring. The only thing I remember is my name and who knows if that’s even real. By the way, what can I call you, ma’am?”

The woman chuckled softly and looked back at jade with a soft smile,

“Definitely not ma’am. You can call me sunflower. We-“ she motioned to the people surrounding her “are the keepers of this place.”

“Keepers?”

“Yes, dear,” Sunflower began walking towards Jade and held out her hand. Jade placed her shaky hand into Sunflower’s and was led into the circle.

“Welcome to Crystal Beach. Our job on this island is to regulate world peace. I know that sounds like a very large and unreachable thing but the fact is that we are on our way to achieving it. We use music and dancing to send strong vibrations to our sister dimension, Earth.”
“So this place isn’t on Earth?” Jade asked.

“Well, its neither here nor there. It’s somewhere in-between Earth’s reality and the outer universe.” Sunflower smiled at Jade’s baffled expression.

“If you try to understand it, you won’t enjoy it,” Sunflower said, “come dance with us. Be a part of the movement.” She threw her head back and smiled at the sun.

Confused but intrigued, Jade obliged and started dancing as all the beautiful people around her began singing and swaying. They danced and danced until the golden grass became familiar friends with their bare feet.
