The Ones Who Stray
By Laura Dee Battle

The future melts away in an audience of clarity
The past no longer part of me in fragile grips of reality
I'm tired of fighting simply for survival's sake
No life of my own; not even one I cared to fake
So where do I exist in this plane of loneliness?
Existence is a price to pay for fleeting thoughts of bliss
Grounded are the infinite crowds that bring these feelings back
Dangerous are the filtered words that make it through the cracks
Awakened to the consequence of everything that I've survived
Learning that the childhood dreams that stayed with me are not contrived
Maybe there's another way to find the peace that cut my skin
Maybe there's a better life that doesn't end; where I begin
These richer things are pouring in along with tears from yesterday
But I'm still here...
alive with fear...
a beacon for the ones that stray...
