Helpless
I watched her in pain, torrid discomfort
She writhed, twisted, rolled around
Then feebly apologised for being a bother
I nodded, half-smiled, fighting tears
I watched her sigh, heave, tremble
She squeezed my hand with a weak grasp
A searing tear besieged my face
Burning my cheek pores as it travelled down
I watched her worry lines get deeper
She lay still as her thumb toe struggled with the index
Her lips moved, gearing for speech
I wait for a spell, but words never found life
I watched her shame as the urine bag filled up
She looked at me, in search of empathy
I watched, helpless, unable to do much
As the cancer got the better of her
