This was written in Clark Cemetery, Whittier, California, one October afternoon in 2010. Prior to my visit that day, I had picked out the name of a girl who died at age 14 from the official burial list. When I found Nellie's name on the memorial marker, I touched her name with my index finger, sat down at a nearby table, and let my mind go. I recall the words flowed out of me like water from a faucet. After some polishing and revising, I finished the poem in 45 minutes. This work is one of 73 extended epitaphs from my published book, Voices from Clark Cemetery. It is now avaiable at Amazon, and Barnes & Noble.com.
