Death's Courting - Constanza

Though I have no wish to die now
for this moment I feel much joy
ah death it courts me being coy

A time may come I know not how
yes endings have a fatal lure
and death like life can be demure

when sorrow rings my ashen brow
and springtime's warmth I can't retain
for flesh, but clay it does constrain

until that day I'll rail and howl
I'll paint the pictures in my mind
and stare at holy lights that blind

for life is precious, this I know
now leave sweet death, and let me sleep
today is not the day you'll reap

Though I have no wish to die now,
a time may come I know not how,
when sorrow rings my ashen brow,
until that day I'll rail and howl,
for life is precious, this I vow.

Hi Debbie: Since I am ancient, I love poems of death and I especially loved yours. Especially the last stanza. "until that day I'll rail and howl". Kinda like Dylan Thomas' rage rage against the light".

Debbie, yesterday I came here and read this poem.. I kept looking at it for a long time. Sometimes I wish I had the ability to communicate without writing, becoz words don't always do justice to how I've felt about a poem. I loved here how you perceived death( some say that's the only truth of Life), and how you know to 'live'.. Yes, we move ahead on our journey and prepare ourselves to embrace that ultimate truth!

This is very well written. I agree with everything here. I have been so close to death too many times and I am still here. As you say I will die, but not today. Thanks for sharing.... Lucilla

I like this. Death used to be just a word to me. I'll be seventy-six in a couple of months, death is no longer just a word. It is something which occupies my thoughts on a daily basis. It seems I have some good company.

better than nicely writen. you took a style and made it into something worth reading. so true were the words as they passed through my mind. especially the line i have no desire to die now. that line stuck to me.
