About Sunflowers

When I came home, I saw what you had done.
            Those funny sunflowers
                                 spontaneously sprung
and which bordered our drive a bit too carelessly,
reaching their leafy arms a tad too far -
                                                                    you'd cut them down!

You'd told me on the phone you'd cut the weeds,
and I'd been happy about that. . . until I saw
              and understood.
How odd
and yet how utterly explicable it seems to me
that you would look at something bright and blond and beaming
                and see a noxious weed.

The driveway looks naked now and uninviting -
similar to how I sometimes see your soul
                       after you cut me
                          to the core.

It's funny about sunflowers. . . they always come back,
         sometimes to a different spot,
and grinning.

Wow, such feeling in this poem Andrea. Getting to know you a bit over the years, I have seen how you seem to prefer to view the beauty and positive side of life, but I have also found subtle but profound deepness inside of you. To me this poem shows the truth of who you are.

I love sunflowers, too, I grow them in my garden every year! This poem is bright and sunny, yet it has a deep sadness that is almost too painful to read about! This poem is terrific, Andrea! I love it! :)

I love how they follow the sun with their faces. Bittersweet poem. I used to live on the seeds, raw and baked with salt. Yum! Great poem!

Wow Andrea - I absolutely LOVE this, especially the last verse, comparing the cutting of the sunflowers to the emotional cuts within...Congrats! - Tim

Strange. Van Gogh - one ugly dude - must have identified with the sunflower because he painted them so often. A real classy write, dear Andrea. AS a child I also hacked down sunflowers and am now ashamed Love, daver

Congrats Andrea on this very assertive, symbolic and beautiful write. Some of its lines project a tone of deep sadness. Love and best wishes always...Ravindra K Kapoor

the suspense is over, andrea, and you're a winner! haha those smiley sunflowers are cute...but I detected a dark undertone here...you will see why I placed it jointly with the other one - I felt they were two very different takes on the same theme of damage being inflicted, and I loved that juxtaposition - congrats! :)
