The Hat Trick
Written for my friends son, bowling in the picture, for his 13th birthday. 05-13-2020 The sun is shining brightly, a special day has dawned The spectators they have no idea, the fear that will be spawned The captains stroll out to the pitch, a coin pushed in the ground The same coin flipped up in the air, the crowd make not a sound The Dapto captain calls a head, they watch the bright coin fall The Dapto captain wins the toss, says, we will take the ball He was thinking of young Brando, the decision made to bowl His position as a prospect, not well known at all The fielding side take up their spots, the captain calls to Jack Do you think that you can take 'em son, out and send them back Now for up and coming kids, praise is all it takes To step them up a gear or two, the difference it makes The batsman take their places, the one who takes his guard Sees a young bloke at the other end, thinks this will not be hard Middle and off please he says, a real prophetic phrase When he thinks back later on, stay with him all his days Now Jack he paces to his mark, he drops the white disk down And there at the other end, a batsman of renown Marco takes a steady run, but that is where it ends The ball just rockets down the pitch, and from the off it bends The mighty batsman leaves a gap, between the pad and bat Ball takes the off and middle stump, and that's the end of that As he goes back to his seat, with a sad and wistful grin He swings 'em from the offside mate, says to the new man in Now Jack may be a young'n, but knows what he's about A straight one takes a snick to slips, another one is out So now he's on a hat trick, the pressure really on How to outwit the batsman, imagine he's The Don Be very hard to take him, with any sort of normal ball He struggles for the answer, as he hears the captain call I'll tell you what I want from you, it's very hard to do But if anyone can do it Jack, that someone is you Send one down short of a length, a bouncer he will see But give it heaps of backspin, and a skidder it will be So Jack he sends a rocket down, the bat is raised up high That's all it takes to let it through, strikes him on the lower thigh Jack swings around, arms raised, how's that, they heard him shout The Ump says Bloody Beautiful, sorry mate you're out Now this is just a fantasy, but who is there to say A young and worthy bowler, could not pull it off some day
