Fleurs ou Fleurs devant un portrait - Matisse
Who would ignore a giraffe?
Place it off-centre and
perhaps I would, on a particularly grey day
where I was all but disappearing myself
"Please point it out to me," I might say,
all the colour returning to my face,
joie de vivre leaping into the essence of me
as you and I see what we want to see
It's so easy to get swallowed up in patterns
when everything becomes wallpaper,
including ourselves,
until we just snap out of it—
momentarily, start to look around
Darkness may crouch and stick to the edges
it sets everything off, that contrast
danger lurking low, it's the weirdest thing
until you let your focus slide
to be suddenly aware
that everything is in colour
Forget what's captured fades, wilts, tarnishes or breaks
every second there is less in the pattern of it
but right now, there is a chance to be distracted at least
