Oak Faerie and Her Belief In Heaven

Oak Faerie knows there is a delicate balance
Between accepting a gift, and feeling it is charity
He has to be particularly careful in Mother Chipmunk’s case
Her baby fell out of the oak and died.

He wants to appear empathetic but not sympathetic.
Sympathy tends to make a grieving parent feel worse.
Especially if they think you have no idea how they feel
Which of course you do not.

He brings a bag of walnuts to Mother Chipmunk.
Tells her how sorry he is, and waits.
She reiterates the story; it is sad.
She saw her child die. The sun brightens the forest.

But she is now in Chipmunk Land, she adds.
This thought gives her comfort.
He gives her a gentle nod, and leaves.
Knowing he did all he could.

Ah, how often we find ourselves in this situation, not knowing what to say and fearing saying the wrong thing or something that will only make the situation worse. This is a fine teaching poem, Caren.
