My Companion

A writer needs a place to write With comfort, peace and quiet, Or that is what I've heard, at least; Some day I'd like to try it. We all make do with what we have And noise is my companion, Surrounding and entrenching me Like echoes in a canyon. I tune it out, though it be traffic, Radio or siren, The kinds of things that likely Never bothered Poe or Byron. Not being in their league, of course, (And barely well-regarded) My thoughts still make it to the page Though noise has me bombarded.

Hahaha! Love the last stanza. I agree with you, Ilene, I need a quiet place to think, read, and write. Happily I'm far from all heavy road traffic, though not sirens. And my classical music radio station is always on; it's the only music I find conducive to writing. Thank God for Bach, Mozart, Mendelsohn, and so many wonderful composers who bring me much composure. / M

since i mostly live in manhattan, i've gotten used to writing with lots of background noise. i can usually tune it out, but not always. i also have the radio turned to either classical music, blues or jazz (and occasionally rock and roll), but i prefer to write with no music on at all.

I'd rather read you than Poe or Byron any day! (It's because I have good taste;-) ~ john
